SIUE Men's Basketball: Predicted to Finish Third in the OVC for 2025-26 Season (2025)

Get ready for an exciting basketball season, as the SIUE men's basketball team is gearing up for a thrilling ride! After their historic Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Championship and March Madness debut, the Cougars are predicted to finish third in the 2025-26 season.

In a recent preseason poll, voted on by OVC head coaches and communication experts, SIUE received a first-place vote and an impressive 163 points. This recognition showcases the team's consistent growth and ability to compete at the top level.

"It's all about hitting the court and showing what you've got," said SIUE Head Coach Brian Barone. "Our program has gained a reputation for being a consistent contender, and I couldn't be prouder. We've come a long way in a short time."

While Little Rock is favored to take the top spot with 12 first-place votes and 188 points, and SEMO is predicted second with 177 points, SIUE is hot on their heels. Tennessee State, Lindenwood, and Morehead State round out the top five, but the Cougars are determined to prove their worth.

And here's where it gets interesting: two key players, seniors Ring Malith and Arnas Sakenis, have been named SIUE's Players to Watch. Malith, a versatile force, finished third in scoring with 11.1 points per game and led the team in rebounding with 7.0 per game. He was also an All-Tournament team selection during SIUE's championship run.

"Ring is a game-changer on both ends of the court," Barone said. "His performance in the OVC last season was exceptional. With his versatility and ability to make an impact, he deserves this recognition."

Sakenis, a defensive powerhouse, led the league in total blocks with 48 and an average of 1.85 blocks per game. His size and relentless effort make him a force to be reckoned with.

"Arnie's defensive impact has grown each year," Barone added. "A player of his caliber, who gives it his all every game, definitely deserves a spot on the watchlist."

The Cougars will kick off their season with a bang on October 26th, facing Missouri Baptist in an exhibition game. Before the game, they'll proudly present two banners celebrating their OVC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.
